Lip filler: how long it lasts and what not to do afterwards
These are the questions we are asked most before and after lip enhancement. Here are the answers, without promises: how long it lasts, how to look after yourself in the first few days, what is normal and what is not, and whether it can be reversed.
How long it lasts
As a guide, between 6 and 12 months. Hyaluronic acid is gradually reabsorbed, and the pace depends on several things:
- The product: each reference has a different consistency, softer to hydrate or firmer to shape.
- The amount injected.
- Each person: everyone’s skin and body reabsorb the product at a different pace.
- Movement: the mouth moves a lot when talking, eating and smiling.
The doctor gives you an indication for your case in consultation. To compare products and prices, see our guide to hyaluronic acid prices.
The first time
The first time, the doctor is usually cautious with the amount. That is normal: it is easier to add a little at the follow-up than to correct too much. In the first few days, swelling can also make the lips look fuller than they will be, which is why the result is assessed at the follow-up.
What not to do afterwards
We give you written instructions in your language. As a general rule, for the first few days:
- Do not massage or press your lips unless the doctor tells you to.
- Do not wear lip make-up on the day.
- Avoid intense heat (sauna, steam room, strong sun) and strenuous exercise.
- If you are prone to cold sores, tell the doctor before the treatment.
What is normal and what is not
It is normal for your lips to feel swollen or tender, or to have a small bruise at the injection points. This usually fades within a few days.
It is not normal, and you should call us straight away, if you notice pain that increases instead of easing, a change in skin colour (paler or purplish), blisters or any change in your vision. These situations are uncommon, but it is important to act quickly: it is one of the reasons why this treatment is always performed by a doctor.
Can it be removed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with a specific product, hyaluronidase, always on medical advice. This is one of its advantages over other products. And even if nothing is done, the body reabsorbs it over time.
Is it safe?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the skin, and the products we use are CE-marked. Like any medical procedure, it is not risk-free: that is why it always starts with a consultation.
As a rule it is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, nor if there is an active infection in the area. Tell us about your allergies, medication and previous treatments. More details on the lip enhancement page.

Does it last less the first time?
We do not give a different figure for the first time: as a guide, between 6 and 12 months, depending on the product and the person. The doctor gives you an indication for your case.
When does the swelling go down?
It usually goes down within a few days. If it increases instead, or comes with pain or a change in skin colour, call us.
Can I repeat it before it has completely gone?
Yes, if the doctor considers it appropriate. At each visit they assess whether to repeat it and with what amount, to keep a natural result.
How much does it cost?
From €240 per 1 ml. You will find all prices in our guide to hyaluronic acid prices.
